I notice a lot of people don't get proper credit for steals (including myself) and other stats. See below for the correct definition of a steal and notice the bold/underline, this where a lot of people get it wrong. Also, blocks, assists and even turnovers are something most people don't get proper due. If you're taking stats and are unsure of what happen on the court just ask, don't just leave it. I think if we record stats we must do it as consistent as we can, if not we shouldn't have them at all.
"Steals are credited to the defensive player who first causes the turnover, even if he does not end up with possession of the live ball. To earn a steal, the defensive player must be the initiator of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. Whenever a steal is recorded by a defensive player, an offensive player must be credited as committing a turnover." |
